Paul Edelman to be Honored by The Seamen's Church Institute
Paul Edelman to be honored by the Seamen’s Church Institute at the 31st Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner on June 12, 2008.
The Seamen’s Church Institute helps seamen in distress since they face many problems, especially foreign seamen who may end up in a U.S. port when their shipowner employer goes broke. The Institute has chaplains in the major seaports and riverports and larger facilities in many of them including New York City and New Jersey.
The chaplains visit foreign ships to help seamen contact their homes and help in other ways on a nonsectarian basis. In addition, the Institute has training facilities so that seamen can raise their ratings and qualify for higher positions. Financial support comes from shipowners and other companies in the maritime industry, including maritime lawyers.
The Silver Bell Dinner is a major fund raiser usually with hundreds of supporters and gives awards for ship rescues and other achievements. Paul Edelman is the first plaintiff’s lawyer to receive the award. It is a tribute to him and the Kreindler firm which has represented crew members and longshoremen for over two generations when Harry Kreindler, a firm founder, had a large practice in the field.
We are incredibly proud of Paul who is a leading advocate of injured seamen and their families.
On June 26, 2018 Paul S. Edelman, our treasured friend and colleague passed away. We will miss him dearly.
