Woman Loses Lung Over Misdiagnosed Breast Cancer
October 30, 2007
New York — Kreindler & Kreindler LLP has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against NYU Medical Center and four individual doctors alleging medical negligence. On May 12, 2005, wife, mother and breast cancer survivor, Sofia Zeldin, 60, of New Jersey, was experiencing shortness of breath and was admitted to NYU Medical Center. Mrs. Zeldin was issued a primary diagnosis of lung cancer instead of breast cancer; defendants removed her right lung.
"The breast cancer could have been treated with chemo only, and did not require organ removal," says Susan Friery, MD and attorney with Kreindler & Kreindler LLP.
NYU Medical Center doctors (including a roster of 2005 department leaders,) failed to properly diagnose the tumor as breast cancer. They diagnosed primary lung cancer for Sophia Zeldin. The defendants failed to review her medical history which includes her prior pathology slides located at NYU. They failed to obtain proper staining and testing on slides and to send those out for review. Outside expert review was also not obtained; all of which caused the improper removal of Zeldin's organ.
"This medical team did not consider metastatic breast cancer or seek outside expertise. Sofia Zeldin will suffer from their grievous mistakes with physical and emotional injuries for the rest of her life." Friery, M.D. and attorney says of her client.
