In January 2000, partner David Beekman obtained a $13 million structured settlement from a major auto maker for a young girl who was seriously injured in a car crash. We claimed that the manufacturer had failed to install rear seat shoulder belts (although the car was produced before federal law required such belts). The girl, a rear seat passenger wearing only the available lap belt, was rendered a paraplegic.
