US Air Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, reportedly after striking a flock of birds. The accident highlights the growing danger that birds pose to aviation, which was the subject of a study conducted by Kreindler & Kreindler before the accident. That study not only addressed the bird strike problem generally, but focused on the serious problem at LaGuardia Airport in New York, from which Flight 1549 departed.

A copy of the study is available from the firm for victims or others interested in the significant aviation safety issues related to the accident. Please contact Andrew ("Duke") Maloney at (212) 973-3438, AMaloney@Kreindler.com, to request a copy of the study.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident and it will be some time before we have sufficient information to determine its root causes. The airplane's engines, its data recorders (black boxes) and maintenance records will determine whether there were any engine anomalies that contributed to the accident.

On December 31, 2008, two weeks before US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered heightened inspection procedures for the type of engine on the Airbus A-320, saying it was prone to compressor stall. Compressor stalls are a disruption of airflow into the engine which causes a loss of power and possibly engine shutdown.

The NTSB's examination of the recovered right engine, which had experienced an unusual surge on a flight several days before the accident, revealed damage consistent with a bird strike. The left engine has been found, but will need to be examined to determine whether it suffered any damage from bird strikes.

The NTSB will also be looking at radar data to determine whether the flock of birds was visible and what steps, if any, by either the crew or air traffic controllers, may have prevented the accident.

Kreindler & Kreindler LLP has a team of aviation attorneys, including pilots, working on the accident and are available to discuss the potential legal claims that passengers may be able to pursue against the responsible parties.
