Dan Nelson joined Kreindler & Kreindler in 2007 after several years as a successful aviation and copyright attorney in Colorado.

He focuses his practice on intellectual property, aviation and products liability cases. He has tried and mediated cases in state and federal courts throughout the country, and has obtained several multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients. He has argued appeals before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Colorado Court of Appeals, and has been counsel of record in two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Nelson has litigated many major aviation cases, including cases arising from the following crashes:

  • American Airlines Flight 587, the crash of an Airbus A300B4-605R at Belle Harbor, New York on November 12, 2001;
  • Gol Airlines Flight 1907, a mid-air collision of a Boeing 737-800 and an Embraer Legacy over the Amazon jungle on September 29, 2006;
  • American Flight 77, the crash of a Boeing 757-200 into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001;
  • TWA Flight 800, the crash of a Boeing 747-131 at East Moriches, New York on July 17, 1996;
  • KAL Flight 801, the crash of a Boeing 747-300 at Nimitz Hill, Guam on August 6, 1997; and
  • Comair Flight 5191, the crash of a Canadair CRJ -100ER at Lexington, Kentucky on August 27, 2006.

Mr. Nelson has litigated cases involving most general aviation manufacturers, including: Cessna models 172, 182, 210, 340, and 421; Beech models 35, 36, B-55, and B-58; Piper Saratoga and Turbo-Saratoga, Malibu/Mirage and Cheyenne; Aerospatiale/ Eurocopter Lama SA315B helicopters.

He has litigated cases involving engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Rolls-Royce/Allison, and Turbomeca.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Philosophy from Regis College, where he won three U.S. national championships in academic debate. He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, Colorado, where he won the prestigious Carrigan Cup Mock Trial Competition, the Rothgerber Moot Court Competition, and the Austin W. Scott Jr. Award for Excellence in Oral Argument

He is a member of the New York Bar and Colorado Bars. He frequently writes and lectures about various topics relating to copyright law, aviation law, and civil litigation.

He is an active member of the American Association for Justice (formerly ATLA) where he serves on the NLD Board of Governors, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Aeronautics Committee, among several other professional organizations.

  • Faulkner v. National Geographic Enterprises, Inc., 409 F.3d 26 (2nd Cir. 2005), cert. denied, 546 U.S. 1076, 126 S.Ct. 833, 163 L.Ed.2d 707 (2005); and
  • Bobian v. Czech Airlines, 93 Fed. Appx. 406 (3rd Cir. 2004).
